A whipping boy as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary

  • A scapegoat.
  • A boy formerly raised with a prince or other young nobleman and whipped for the latter’s misdeeds.

So what’s the deal with the Vandermeer hate that’s rife in the world of Flyers fans? Now I appreciate that ‘beauty’ or in this case ‘performance’ is in the eye of the beholder but to hold a finger to the pulse of Flyerdom you’d be left with little but the belief that James Vandermeer was a bust after a dozen games in his return engagement, Fantasia Barrino got better press for skipping out on “The Color Purple”.

He’s a turnover machine! Is pretty popular these days, it’s odd only because Vandermeer has been marked for 5 turnovers since coming over from Chicago, granted he recorded those 5 in 3 games. Maybe it’s just a matter of remembering the bad.

He’s not playing physical enough! I’m not going to lie; I’d like to see Jim throttle someone pronto. In that vein I expect to see him drop the gloves Sunday Night. 14 hits in 12 games, 5 games without a hit tallied. Yeah, I’d like to see some more board rattling, having said that, let’s look one other interesting number from the dozen games played.

As a Flyer, Jim has recorded 15 blocked shots in 12 games. For perspective, he recorded 19 blocks in 26 games for Chicago this year. I find this interesting for a couple of reasons. The Flyers have clearly been expecting their defense to be more aggressive about blocking. Vandermeer has improved on this area since coming to Philly. Is it out of the realm to believe Jim is taking a steadier approach to being a big minute blue liner with this team, instead of chasing hits around the ice? It’s not as if he’s abandoned physical play no matter how passionate the guys on the interwebs seem on the subject.

He’s costing the team! This is my favorite. The Flyers have lost twice in the 12 games Vandermeer has played. We’re not talking subjective merit on this. A guy either costs you or he doesn’t. 18 of a possible 24 points since joining the team cannot be argued as costing the team to anyone who’s watched a game or even heard one in passing on a weak AM signal.  That’s not to even mention that in the 12 games prior to Vandermeer/Eager the Flyers recorded 4 wins and tallied 10 of a possible 24 points.

He’s just another slow physical defenseman! Couldn’t be further from the truth and again makes you wonder if the folks who complain about Vandermeer actually watch the sport. While he’ll never be called fleet-of-foot, mobility is certainly not an issue; the guy can get around the ice very well. He can play the Power Play or Kill Penalties and has been one of the top 3 ES defensemen on this team since arriving, he even led the defense in PK time January 10th.  So maybe it’s offense? Maybe Jim isn’t a big enough contributor; he’ll flirt with 30 points if you put any stock in the projections.

I’m well versed in the history of and need for a whipping boy in the Flyers culture; it just seems to me that the criterion for selection needs a drastic upgrade. Or maybe the fan base needs some remedial courses?

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I been tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post,
Tied to the whipping post,
Good lord, I feel like Im dyin.
