The Defense and the Slump?

Some folks have decided that the Flyers are slumping post All-Star game. I do not agree; granted going 3-4-0 is not a trend I want to see continue. With GM Paul Holmgren stating that the team is covetinga puck-moving blueliner let’s take a look at the Flyers defensemen since the All-Star game. Slump Stats

Kukkonen, of course, has only played one game. Coburn missed one game (to date). Braydon has been a bright spot on a decidedly average blueline. Lasse was not as impressive as the internet chatter during his absence was.

Derian Hatcher, who many feel is the cornerstone of the Flyers defense, is the worst +/- player on the blueline. Adding to it he’s only two shy of Jones for the lead in Give-Aways. Many fans will point to Hatcher’s impressive 20 Hits, the total is less stunning considering 10 of those hits occurred in one game and for the bulk of ‘the slump’ Hatcher has been a 1 Hit Wonder, credited with one hit in four of the seven games since the break.

Arguably, Jason Smith is the ‘Big Hitter’ on the Philly blueline. Tallying 16 hits in 7 games, being held to one only twice, and tied for the lead in Blocked Shots with 14 in the same stretch.

Kimmo Timonen, on pace for 44 points, hasn’t been embraced as warmly as one might expect. Kimmo’s 7 hits, putting him middle of the pack, his tie with Smith for the Blocked Shots lead, and the status as the only positive has to get folks feeling a bit better about the Finn.

The big question as the Flyers move closer and closer to the trade deadline is who do you keep? For my money it’s a battle between Smith and Hatcher and the outcome depends purely on the player they ‘covet‘. If this mystery crush can play 22-24 minutes a game, Hatcher is on the fast track out of town. If we’re looking at another 18-20 minute defenseman then we need to move Smith. Vandermeer becomes another option in the second scenario but what’s his value at the deadline compared to Jason Smith?

Derian Hatcher, DDS.

I noticed a couple of folks found the blog looking for the Derian Hatcher hit on Sidney Crosby.  Not wanting to disappoint, and enjoying the moment myself, I’ll throw it on here

And since we’re all waiting for Peter Forsberg to return, who can forget Peter calling out Crosby’s dive is a fantastic source for this stuff guys and gals!
